IHM Academy of EMS Hybrid EMT Program

The primary focus of the Emergency Medical Technician is to provide basic emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system. This individual possesses the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation. Emergency Medical Technicians function as part of a comprehensive EMS response, under medical oversight. Emergency Medical Technicians perform interventions with the basic equipment typically found on an ambulance. The Emergency Medical Technician is a link from the scene to the emergency health care system.

Program Goals

To prepare competent entry-level Emergency Medical Technicians in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains.

Upon successful completion of this course, graduates are eligible to take the National Registry of EMT exam, the final step towards certification as an EMT.

Course Structure

The schedule for EMT courses varies including whether the course is an in-person or hybrid format. Questions regarding enrollment or schedule can be directed to the Admissions Coordinator at 314-768-1234, ext 4130 or IHM@gmr.net. The course is a total of 168 clock hours.

Didactic Phase: The scheduled course days and hours vary depending on the course format.

Field rotations are also scheduled.

Hybrid course format

Didactic Phase: Theory is delivered via synchronous online classes four days a week for four hours a day: Monday-Thu, 10a - 2p CST

Skill bootcamp: Students travel to IHM Academy of EMS in St. Louis to complete a five-day skill bootcamp and final testing. A sixth day in the St. Louis area is required to take the NREMT EMT Practical Exam. Monday-Friday 8am-5pm, and the NREMT Practical on Satrunday 9am-5pm.

Field rotations: During the course students are assigned 48 hours of field experience in an ambulance setting. Rotations should be completed at the sponsoring location prior to the skill bootcamp phase of the course.

AHA BLS for the Healthcare Provider is included in this course.

Required Diagnostic Kit Requirements:

Each student is required to obtain safety shears, pen light, anti-fog eye protection, and stethoscope. These items can be found online or at any medical supply store.

Technology requirements (potential additional student expense)

Courses include online assignments and students must possess, or have access to, an appropriate electronic device: a tablet or laptop is preferred. Computer availability on campus is limited, however wireless internet access is available.

Course Financing
The EMT program does not participate in Title IV Federal Financial Aid Programs. Tuition may be paid in full at the time of registration or students may opt to split the tuition into two (2) payments. Tuition may be paid by check or money order and Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover.

Application Process

Prerequisites

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalency
  • Completed application packet
  • Valid email address: students will be required to correspond via email and will be notified via email of acceptance.
  • Proof of personal healthcare coverage
  • Background check, including a negative drug screen, is required prior to admission.
  • Immunization Requirements: proof of immunity or vaccination:
    • Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR): two shot series or positive titer
    • Tetanus/diphtheria: Tdap: within the last ten years
    • Hepatitis B: three shot series or positive titer
    • Chicken pox (varicella): two shot series or positive titer
    • Meningitis: documented shot as a teen or adult
    • Influenza vaccination: during flu season prior to beginning clinical rotations (for the clinical/field phases)
    • COVID-19 vaccination:  proof of vaccination prior to the first day of class.  Vaccination is two doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine or the single dose of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine.  Exemptions are not permitted.  Boosters may be required by state or local health authorities or clinical or field internship sites.
  • TB testing is required prior to attending clinical or field internship rotations.
    • TB/PPD test is a two-step process.  If you test positive for tuberculosis, you must present a negative chest x-ray
    • Requirements for timing and repeat testing vary by clinical site and information is provided by the Clinical Coordinator.
  • Specific prerequisites may apply depending on the program selected

Registration and Admission Process

Upon receipt of payment students will receive an email confirming their registration.

Note: 30 days prior to the start of class you will receive another email which will include two attachments. Please complete all necessary paperwork by the due date listed on last page of the Student Contract.

Required Textbooks

The student must purchase their EMT books from JB Learning. If purchased from a vendor other than JBLearning students will not have the required textbook the program. Students are required to bring the text on the first day of class.
